Taiwan`s LED industry is likely to see revenue rise 18% next year from last year`s estimated NT$86.4 billion (US$2.7 billion at US$1:NT$32) as a whole, according to the government-backed Photonics Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA) A Cens News article reports that PIDA predicts road sign, outdoor billboard and lighting applications will power revenue growth. PIDA reports that LED backlights account for 37% of the total revenues, followed by 32% contributed by LED devices used in electronic equipment. PIDA reports that use of LEDs for road signs and billboards rose to 20% of Taiwan`s LED industry revenue last year, up from 5% in 2008. According to PIDA, 7% of the revenue in 2009 came from LED lighting applications. This is up 5% in 2008. According to PIDA, Taiwan is currently the world`s No.1 LED supplier by volume and No.2 by revenue. PIDA predicts that the 2010 revenue of NT$86.4 billion from the LED industry, an estimated NT$54.4 billion (US$1.7 billion) will be generated by the packaging segment and NT$32 billion (US$1 billion) by the chip-making sector. The article indicated that although Taiwan's LED industry is becoming more and more vertically integrated, it still has 80% dependence on imported manufacturing equipment and materials. The article cited executives who said that cooperation with mainland China is crucial to Taiwan`s LED industry in light of the mainland`s huge markets for LED lighting projects. In addition, they urged Taiwan government to offer lucrative incentives to LED lighting users, and come up with industry standards for LED lighting.
